Supporting People with Learning Disabilities

Person‑centred, respectful and empowering social work support across the UK

At Sky Social Work, we are committed to providing compassionate, skilled and legally‑sound support for people with learning disabilities.
While our core services remain the same, we recognise that individuals with learning disabilities often require adapted communication, extended time, and sensitive assessment approaches. Our team brings the experience and patience needed to ensure every person is heard, valued and supported.

Our Approach

People with learning disabilities are unique in their strengths, needs, communication styles and lived experiences. We tailor every piece of work to the individual by ensuring:

Person‑centred practice

We take time to learn about the person, their communication needs, routines, preferences, interests and what matters most to them.
Our assessments are shaped around their pace and comfort.

Accessible communication

We use:

  • simplified language

  • visual supports (where helpful)

  • repetition and checking understanding

  • familiar people who support communication

We ensure the person has every possible opportunity to express their wishes and feelings.

Trauma‑informed & respectful interactions

We understand that people with learning disabilities may have faced discrimination and/or loss of autonomy. Our work is grounded in dignity, safety and emotional wellbeing.

Working with families and support networks

We recognise how valuable family, carers and support workers can be in helping the individual communicate, remain calm, or feel safe.
They play an important role in sharing background information and supporting best‑interest decisions where needed.

Specialist expertise in the Mental Capacity Act

We apply the MCA (2005) with the principle of maximising capacity first, ensuring the person:

  • is given all possible support

  • receives information in a meaningful way

  • has time to process and respond

  • is not assumed to lack capacity because of a disability

How Our Services Support People with Learning Disabilities

Mental Capacity Assessments (MCA)

We assess capacity for decisions such as:

  • Care and support

  • Residence

  • Property and financial decisions

  • Legal decisions (LPA, wills, contracts)

  • Safety and day‑to‑day wellbeing

  • Basic health and treatment needs, such as attending the dentist, optician, GP check‑ups and routine health appointments

We do not assess capacity for complex medical interventions, treatment plans, or medication decisions — our focus is on the everyday decisions that support a person’s wellbeing, comfort, access to healthcare, and participation in community life.

COP3 Court of Protection Assessments

For individuals with learning disabilities who may need a deputyship, we provide:

  • thorough, person‑centred COP3 assessments

  • clear explanations suitable for their communication style

  • sensitive exploration of risks, strengths and support needs

Best‑Interest Decision-Making

When a person lacks capacity for a specific decision, we support:

  • best‑interest meetings

  • multi‑agency coordination

  • advocacy for the person’s rights

  • promoting least‑restrictive options

  • high‑quality documentation

Our Best Interests Assessor ensures decisions remain lawful, ethical and centred on the individual’s wellbeing.

Why This Matters

People with learning disabilities deserve:

✔ to be involved

✔ to be understood

✔ to feel safe

✔ to have their voices heard

✔ to have assessments that respect their whole identity

Sky Social Work ensures that every assessment and report reflects the person as an individual - not just their diagnosis.
